The Symptoms of Sleep Apnea – Kailua-Kona

Sleep apnea has a number of symptoms that manifest themselves when a person is asleep or awake. It’s important that you remain attentive and alert as to these symptoms so that you can bring them to the attention of Dr. Carter Yokoyama at his Kailua-Kona practice. Below are some common sleep apnea symptoms of which everyone should be aware.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea During Sleep

Since sleep apnea affects your breathing during sleep, there are a number of telltale signs of the condition when a person is asleep. Some of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Chronic snoring
  • Interrupted breathing while you sleep
  • Choking or gasping while you sleep
  • Frequently waking up during sleep
  • Erratic breathing while you sleep

Since these are all things you may not be aware of while you sleep, a friend, family member, or loved one will likely notice these symptoms. Be sure to tell the person you care about if you note any of the above. Tell that person to visit our practice serving Kailua-Kona for a sleep apnea examination.

Signs of Sleep Apnea During Waking Hours

Many times people who suffer from sleep apnea will not be aware of any symptoms until they are awake. Many people who suffer from sleep apnea experience the following during their waking hours:

  • Low energy during the day
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Insomnia or restlessness as you sleep
  • Persistent sore throat or dry throat
  • Changes in mood
  • Poor memory
  • Slower reaction time
  • Decreased interest in sex

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

When diagnosing sleep apnea at our Kailua-Kona, we will first need to discuss the situation with a patient. Telling us about potential symptoms or warning signs of sleep apnea is important, so always be sure to communicate any concerns to members of our team.

Sleep Study (Polysomnogram)

To determine if you are suffering from sleep apnea, a sleep study will need to be conducted. This study will usually be conducted at a hospital and/or sleep study center. While you sleep normally, we will monitor your breathing and airflow, your muscle activity, your eye movements, your heart rate, and brainwave activity. This will let us know for sure if you are suffering from sleep apnea.

Oximetry

Another option for diagnosing sleep apnea is oximetry, which measures the oxygenation of a patient’s blood. This can be done in the comfort of a patient’s own home and involves the use of a sensor placed on the fingertip or the earlobe. Though this is effective to some degree, it is not as effective or comprehensive a diagnostic option as a full sleep study.
